Helpful Advice on Saving On Your Energy Bills

By: Rickie Sol

The holidays are a wonderful time, but opening your utility bill in January can make you drop to your knees. If you are tired of paying high energy costs, here are some things you can do.

1. If you have large sliding glass doors, place something dark under them during winter months. You will be surprised how much heat can be generated from the sun beating on them.

2. If you are going to be out of your home office for more than 20 minutes, turn off all the electrical accessories. Computers, stereos and the like suck up energy if you just leave them on.

3. Check the Pressure in Your Tires - Underinflated tires can reduce gas mileage by 3 to 5 percent and wear out the tires. Make sure to maintain pressures at the top end of the suggested psi of the tire.

4. Consolidate Your Errands - Every time you head out to run errands, you are eating up your car fuel. Try to do all your errands at just one time.

5. Self Laundry Costs - 80 percent of energy costs for doing laundry come from heating the water. Switch to cold water detergents and flip off the heat. You can knock the bill down 80 percent.

6. Water Heating Costs - You can save a ton of money by addressing water heating costs. A family of four uses 700 gallons of water a week bathing. Fix dripping faucets and switch to low flow faucets. Doing so will cut your water heating costs in half.

7. The Electrical Grid - When it comes to renewable energy, you will quickly hear the term electrical grid. It refers the platform maintained by utilities across the country. With solar, you can feed energy into the grid when not using it.

8. Turn off the AC - When driving, one of the big gas guzzlers is your air conditioning. Only use it when absolutely necessary. Roll down the window and get some fresh air.

9. Window Energy Costs - Windows allow for the transfer of heat in a big way. Closing curtains or blinds over them at night can cut down on the rate of heat loss, saving you tons on your bill.

10. Changing Car Filters - Two energy wasters on your car are the fuel filter and air filter. Change them every 3,000 to 6,000 miles. Any oil change location can do it.

Daily life is expensive enough without throwing away money. Take a close look at your energy use and see where you can save money. Over years, the dollar figure will be very high.
