Most people know very little about Maryland. At best, some will tell you that Maryland is one of the states that were used to create Washington D.C., and nothing more. It's a pity that no one really knows of the various tourist attractions or activities of interest in Maryland. If you ask them, they will look at you blankly, trying to figure out what you are talking about. However, the truth is that the state of Maryland has immense possibilities and is an important tourist attraction besides being a vital link to the founding of the United States. In addition to its historical importance in the creation of the United States, this state of precious waterways is also a very special place for Native Americans. For thousands of years before the Europeans arrived, The Native Americans used the waterways linking Chesapeake Bay with its tributaries, which are known as the Potomac River Corridor. The Potomac River Corridor is considered by residents of Maryland and some eastern states as the "Grand Canyon of American history and culture." Beginning with its use by the Native Americans, this vital corridor etched the next chapter into American history by being the place where Europeans first found their freedom and Africans first became enslaved. To be sure, this pivotal area has fueled the commerce, trade, and culture of the Maryland/Chesapeake Bay area for centuries. The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail was created to preserve and honor this great history and tradition. It is one of the most accessible areas of the country's natural splendor with a wide-ranging network of locally managed trails that exceed 770 miles. The Potomac River itself begins in West Virginia and winds its way all along the southern Maryland border. The Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail traces the river along the entire route. In fact, it is entirely possible to hike all the way from D.C. to Seward, Pennsylvania without ever leaving the trails. These historic trails offer more than biking or hiking, of course. Other exciting outdoors possibilities are to paddle down the various streams in the Potomac River network or to drive along the Maryland countryside and its scenic byways. You will be rewarded with some of the most breath taking sights that are there along the east coast of the United States. One of the truly beneficial public works projects, the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail offers a wide range of scenic places and new and exciting activities to its visitors. So, next time someone asks you about Maryland, do tell them that it is home to the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail, one of the most awe-inspiring pieces of Americana.
