One of my great passions is traveling as much as time and the old bank account will allow. Whether you travel alone or with others, there are certain tips that can really help. Here are a few. 1. Preserving Travel Experiences - Digital cameras are nice and all, but you need a long term memento from your trip. When it comes to preserving travel experiences, take a writing journal. Nomad Journals are the best around. 2. Stupid Foreigner Tricks - Locals sometimes like to have a joke at your expense. It usually has to do with food. Don't eat strange stuff unless others are. 3. Packing for Europe - If you are packing for Europe, pack light! Europe is not another planet. They have soap, books, clothes and so on. You can buy it there. Trust me! 4. Avoid Carrying Souvenirs - If you are on an extended trip, you will start accumulating souvenirs of all sorts. Don't haul them all over the place. Mail them home and save your back! 5. Backpacking in Russia - Russia is a tremendous country to backpack. That being said, pick pockets abound in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Don't wear the pack on your back. They will slice it and take off with the contents. 6. Rubber Bottom Backpacks - If you are going to do some backpacking across a region, make sure to buy a backpack with a hard rubber bottom. It prevents rips and such when you set the pack down, which you will do often. 7. Sweet Sorrow Traveling - If you are on a long trip, you will inevitably get tired of those traveling with you. To avoid this, go solo and hookup with others through hostels and such. When you get sick of them, move along. 8. Laptop Charging - When traveling, it is vital you know what the ampage is in the country you are in. More than a few laptops have been zapped by being hooked up to a 220 outlet. Take a regulator to make sure this doesn't happen. 9. Asian Airport Relaxation - If you find yourself stuck in an airport in Asia for a bit, take a look around. Most have massage spas on the premises or just outside the front. It beats trying to sleep in uncomfortable seats. 10. Japanese Rice Etiquette - When eating rice in Japan, never stick your chopsticks in the rice such that they are standing up vertical. It is a symbol of death. Ultimately, we all find different things in our trips. Whatever your preference, you can only get it by jumping out there and going. Don't procrastinate, just go.
