Travel to Spain on a Modest Budget

By: Florence Northcroft

When it comes to European travel, many individuals feel left out because of the high price tag associated with international travel. This is a common myth is that Spain is only for those willing to throw down some serious cash. The truth could not be farther from the truth, as there are many great ways to travel to Spain on even the most modest budget and have a great time doing so!

The cheapest way to see Spain is as a backpacker. If your thoughts are of college kids dragging their possessions on their back and sleeping in the park, think again! These days, individuals of all ages routinely backpack across Europe on a shoestring budget, and yes, they sleep indoors. Backpacking is especially great if you want to see more than the big cities and tourist traps that entice the average Joe. Look to backpack if you are interested in discovering the culture of Spain and meeting individuals who call the country home.

Instead of staying in luxury hotels, look at the other options. Many budget minded travelers choose to stay in hostels instead of hotels to save some cash. Remember, you are supposed to be exploring the country, not the inside of the hotel room so leave your lodging snobbery at home. Hostels are much like dormitories, where travelers share one large room with others. This is a great way to meet other travelers in addition to sticking to your budget. Consider bringing essentials like a sleep sack or shower shoes if you plan on staying in hostels, although most are clean.

The second inexpensive way of seeing Spain is by taking a tour. So if you want to travel with your small children and are new travelers internationally, it is a better option. There are many packages offered by the tour operators to choose from and it would also not burn a whole in your pocket. Just search the Internet for an airline or travel website that suits your budget and requirements. If you find any community group planning a trip to Spain, just check it out as these also offer an all-inclusive tour as a modest price.

Also, consider renting an apartment if you plan on spending an extended time in Spain. This will save you a good bit of money in the long run and there are many furnished apartments and lofts available all over the country specifically for the short term occupant. In addition to saving you on the nightly hotel bill, renting an apartment will allow you to cook your own food instead of eating out in restaurants.

Want to save more money! There are special travel cards and interesting deals to attract various kinds of travelers. You would find cards for youth, students, families and seniors as well. Check these out. Some Spanish cities have special cards that allow you to see its museums, galleries and other attractions at a low price. Block transportation cards allow you to save a lot of money in the long run, as you would be paying per trip.

For transportation in Spain, you can use the train system. You can go from anywhere to anywhere in Spain in trains that are clean and on time. And, it's best to go in for a country pass that will allow you unlimited travel for the period of the pass.

Anyone can enjoy a great trip to Spain and stick to their budget, no matter how restrictive it may be. Bring the entire family or travel by yourself to find the great culture and sights that Spain has to offer.
